Other Sources of INFO!!! By Richard A. Fleetwood - May 2001 As much as I'd like to produce EVERY LAST WORD on BEING PREPARED, there are just not enough moments in this life to do that. I am getting a lot done, and online here the past couple of years, and this update ain't a small one. You should know by now that I do believe in sharing info and sources with all I can, ESPECIALLY if it helps you stay safe and sound. There are many other folks who do the same, with quite a range of information out there, and wide and varied opinions on the entire spectrum of staying alive. Web pages, email lists, discussion message bases, chat rooms, and more are ALL great places to start in your quest to KNOW. SurvivalRing in and of itself is a great place to start and be exposed to new ideas and relationships of one area to another. However, there are some mighty powerful tools at your disposal to get the DETAILS on whatever YOU really must know to be confident in your area of expertise and interest after all is said and done. Starting with SurvivalRing is great, but ENDING there is not my intent. I want to widen your horizons, help you see over the next ridge, and help you know when to yell "DUCK"...especially when it keeps you from being beaned by a frisbee, or rock....or a duck. Get comfortable with several internet search engines and indexes. Hone your skills in knowing how to devine the correct KEYWORD to locate that data that falls into place and turns on the light in the back of your brain which signifies UNDERSTANDING of the task or project at hand. Make personal "online" contacts with people who seem to understand areas YOU want to know more about. Be subtle yet inquisitive in starting into new areas of learning, and TAKE NOTES. Keep a pocket memo pad with you at all times to jot down those little flitting bits of ideas that when put with other little ideas make the next GREAT idea. This is one of my ALL TIME best suggestions...and I use it religiously to keep THIS website growing and expanding. Make personal face to face contacts with people with skills that are worthwhile in tough situations, such as public safety workers, law enforcement, and disaster reponse. Volunteer with organizations that support and protect those goals of watching out for the safety of others. Get classroom training at every opportunity to increase your skill base of REAL life saving skills. Spend time at your library reading historical works on past disasters, their causes, their recovery, and their mitigation....so that YOU might be ready if those things ever happen near you. In other words, TAKE THE TIME TO KNOW WHAT TO DO....BEFORE YOU HAVE TO ACT WITHOUT KNOWING. Instinct is great, but not always conducive to survival or safety.
